What is intracranial research?
Intracranial neuroscience research seeks to understand brain function by recording and measuring neural activity through electrodes that are placed directly within the brain.
Patients with various neurological conditions such as epilepsy may undergo clinical treatment in which depth electrodes are placed in the brain. While the patient is being clinically monitored, they may decide to participate in neuroscience research.
Why does this research matter?
Intracranial research allows for extremely accurate neural signal detection compared to traditional scalp EEG. This data gives us a deeper glance into how brain regions communicate, how the brain responds when exposed to stimuli like a photograph, how behavior is produced, and at what times these events are happening at a millisecond scale.
